Week 8: Photoscanning

This week I scanned what I am dubbing "The Rose Sisters." These are three statues that sit outside looking over the roses near the Chico State rose garden. I chose to do these because they have a lot of great texture. For this scan I took 628 photos and ran them through Photoscan.


For my first pass I aligned the images running the tie point process at medium.

Then I ran the dense cloud process at medium. Everything was looking pretty good.


Then I created the model and ran the masking function on the photos so that it would use the generated model to create masks for each of the 628 photos.

Once the Masks were complete I ran the photo alignment again at a higher setting. It took a few hours but the photos did end up aligning. It was when I tried to generate the dense cloud at a higher setting that it started to take almost too long.


Now that I have canceled that process I have decided that I will use the medium setting model that I used for the masks. The form data that was constructed in the old model doesn't look that bad even though there were some parts of the statue that I couldn't shoot. 


Then I built the textures for the model and it made everything look pretty good so I will be sticking with this scan.


Next week I will be working on cleaning up the UV's and the geometry so that it isn't a few million polygons.

Week 7: Clean Up

This week I took the model that was created from the scan data and retoped it and UVed it so that the textures looked more organized and the poly count wasn't too high. The first thing that I did was take the high poly model and put it into Maya so that I could retop using the quad draw tool. The toughest part about his topology is that he has a bunch of small limbs so it is tough to create character topology for the model.




Once I have retoped the model in Maya I then have to UV it so that I can reapply the new textures to the new model. Once the UV's have been completed I brought the new low poly model into Zbrush and then imported the high poly model and used the divide and project tools to create a high poly model and low poly model with the new UV's


Next I export out the high poly model and import it back into photoscan where I rebuild the textures onto the new model allowing me to apply texture to the new UV's. This makes the UV and texture maps look a lot cleaner.




Once I have baked out the texture I then throw the model into Substance Painter where I bake the model detail from the high poly model onto the low poly model. It was here where I fixed the slight lighting issue that I had on the texture data so it looks like the model is evenly lit. When I baked out the new color texture I threw it into Photoshop to lighten the levels a little bit.

Week 6: Photoscanning

This week I scanned my next object that I will be cleaning up. The object that I have chosen is a small fairy tales Ent that I keep in my house for decoration. I chose this peace because while I've been having fun scanning big object that are outside I wanted to try scanning an object that is a little smaller.


Once again I forgot to capture the process of creating the masks for processing higher detail in Photoscan. But I went through the process of creating a low detail model to mask out the images and allow photoscan to process a much higher quality model in a shorter period of time. There weren't any issues that I ran into while processing the data, everything went very smoothly.



The form data that I was able to capture really came out great. I was really glad that the texture of the wood came out well and that the grooves and knot holes came out looking very well defined.


Although I had perfect weather for this scan, one small issue that I had while scanning is that I did may scan on my porch near my house because it was raining, so one side of the trees texture data looks a little shaded while the rest of the tree is in the light. I will go back and fix the levels of the textures so there is even lighting. 






This week I tested a technique for scanning parts of my house where I scan a peace of the house and process it, then scan another peace of the house and process it. Once I have all of the peaces that I need I will put them together to create a whole room.

This is the first pass that I have processed. Unfortunately the scan messed up and it played a game of Honey I Shrunk The Counter. Some how the software blended the middle of the counter so a major peace of the counter is overlapping. So I'm going to try and rerun the scan and post the results tomorrow morning before class.
